I was supposed to straighten the room, replace the linens, and take the ring directly to lost and found. Instead, I slipped it onto my finger.

The bride disappeared before sunrise.
When I opened Room 12, the bed was still unmade, the sheets told their own story, and a wedding ring had been left behind on the comforter. I should have placed it in lost and found, finished cleaning, and moved on to the next room.
But something about it made me stop.
I slipped the ring onto my finger and looked around the motel room, trying to imagine the woman who had run away from one life and beXXXX another behind this locked door. The longer I stayed, the more curious I became about what had happened here and what it might feel like to stop following the rules myself.The maid is the second chapter of the Reno Motel Series, continuing directly from Runaway Bride. One room. One forgotten ring. One woman who knows she should leave everything exactly as she found it.
She doesn’t.
